While researching Deuteronomy 28, I found at least four different ways that God blesses His people. Although the Old Testament is addressed to Jews, the New Testament established on better promises (Hebrews 8:6), says that Gentiles or non-Jews, have access to the blessing of Abraham. Galatians 3:13-14 says, “13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”
Here are four ways God promises to bless us financially when we follow His commandments according to Deuteronomy 28:1. The primary way that God blesses us is through the work of our employer or business. In Deuteronomy 28:8, God promises to bless all that we set our hand to and to bless to bless all the work of our hands, in Deuteronomy 28:12, in the land which the Lord our God gives us.
Deuteronomy 28:5 says that God will also bless His children in their baskets and their store. Baskets denote a daily supply, and stores could be storing up for a less prosperous season or savings. Today, it could mean a savings account. King Solomon told us in Proverbs 6:6-8 to consider an ant’s ways. She provides meat in the summer and gathers her food in the harvest.
In Deuteronomy 28:8a, The Lord said He would command the blessing upon our storehouses…Storehouses are much larger than baskets. Today, storehouses could be a long-term investment like retirement or a high yielding savings account. God expects the money that He blesses us with to produce and multiply. Jesus rebuked the man with the one talent parable in Matthew 25:27 for not investing his one talent and gaining interest from it with the money exchangers.
God also promises to bless us with houses that we didn’t build. Deuteronomy 6:10-11a says, “And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not. And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not…”
Finally, God promises to bless us so abundantly that we are in position to lend unto many nations and not to borrow (Deuteronomy 28:12). Deuteronomy 28:13 says that the Lord will make us the head, and not the tail; above only, and not beneath; if we hearken unto the commandments of the Lord our God, which He commands us this day, to observe and to do them.
It is time for us to pursue and run after God so that we can receive all of the blessings that He has for us!
